Air valves, type AV, are used for aeration and deaeration of water pipelines. The requirement of aeration of pipelines arises when, as a result of certain working conditions, negative pressure has been created in the line. This negative pressure can cause disturbances in the operation. During deaeration of pipelines atmospheric air which has entered into the pipeline is removed. Typical applications for AV air valves are pipe-break protection systems, which are used in hydro power stations to protect the installation from the effects of pipeline ruptures or large leaks.
Most Critical Application is in case of penstock burst after MIV elevation, which will result in vacuum in the downstream side of PPV. In case large amount of Air is not allowed inside the penstock then it can lead to Collapse of entire penstock line. To avoid such situations, AV valve Auto generate the closing command for PPV.
